In 2026, the real cost of sending money abroad isn't one number. It's three numbers stacked on top of each other, and two of them are designed so you won't notice them. Banks, PayPal, and even some crypto services do it. Once you learn to see all three, you'll never look at a transfer fee the same way again.

So let's compare the three options most of us actually reach for: a good old bank wire, PayPal, and crypto, with real numbers from official fee pages.

First, the trick every provider uses on you

Every international transfer has three cost layers. A method can look cheap on one and quietly rob you on the other two.

The first layer is the transfer fee: the flat charge or percentage printed on your receipt. This is the one everyone stares at.

The second layer is the exchange-rate markup: this is the gap between the mid-market rate, the "real" rate you'd see if you googled it, and the worse rate the provider hands you. There's no line item. They just keep the difference. On a big transfer, this is where most of your money goes to die.

The third layer is downstream fees: the intermediary banks, the recipient-side charge, the cost of turning the money into something the person can actually spend.

So what does a bank actually charge you?

Let's start with the grown-up in the room: the bank wire. We'll use Bank of America as our example, because it's typical of what Chase or Wells Fargo will charge you too.

Straight from Bank of America's own wire page, the numbers of fees look almost honest:

  • Outgoing international wire in U.S. dollars: $45
  • Outgoing international wire in the recipient's local currency: no wire fee, but "an exchange-rate markup applies"
  • Incoming wire: $15
  • Preferred Rewards Platinum members and above: fees waived

Here's what the bank itself admits, in its own words: when you send in a foreign currency, the markup on the conversion is baked into the bank's exchange rate, and the bank makes money on it. The rate, they say, is set at their "sole discretion." Translation: they won't show you the real rate, and they'd rather you didn't check. They don't tell you the size of that markup up front, but independent estimates put it around 2% to 3%.

So, on a $1,000 transfer, once you factor in everything, you're really paying about $65 to $75. On $5,000, it can climb past $170.

The most important thing in this case is to read what's written in small type in the doc.

And then there's the part nobody warns you about: your money doesn't fly straight to Madrid or São Paulo. It hops through intermediary "correspondent" banks, and each hop can quietly shave off another $15 to $50. Neither you nor your bank controls those. Delivery takes one to five business days.

So is the bank ever the right answer?

Yes, when you're moving a large sum, and you want an institutional paper trail you could show a lawyer. For a house deposit or an inheritance, that $45 barely registers as a percentage. For sending your sister €300, it's highway robbery with a marble lobby.

And PayPal? Spoiler: convenience has a price

PayPal is where most of us instinctively go, because the account's already sitting there and the button is right there. That instinct is expensive, unfortunately.

For a cross-border PayPal payment, you get hit twice.

But what about crypto? Isn't it basically free?

Here's where it gets interesting, because crypto plays by completely different rules, and where most people, honestly, get confused.

To understand what crypto costs, you have to split it into two things that are not the same: the transfer itself (moving the coins), and the on-ramp and off-ramp (turning dollars into a stablecoin, and turning that stablecoin back into pesos or euros someone can spend).

The transfer itself is almost free: if you pick the right network. Say you're sending a dollar-pegged stablecoin like USDC or USDT. Here's what a transfer really costs in 2026:

  • Solana: the cheapest, around $0.0005 per transfer, and nearly instant
  • Base and Polygon: just above, under a cent for USDC
  • BNB Chain: about two cents
  • Tron: the network that dominates remittances (more than half of all stablecoin volume runs on it) $0.20 to $1.44 with rented network "energy"
  • Ethereum's main chain: the odd one out, several dollars per transfer.

The gap between cheapest and priciest is roughly a thousandfold. So "crypto is cheap" is only true if you choose the network on purpose. Send USDC on Solana, and the transfer is a rounding error.

But the transfer isn't the cost. The ramps are.

Somebody has to buy the stablecoin with dollars, and somebody has to sell it back into local money. That's where the leakage happens. On the buy side, a big regulated exchange can be great: Coinbase, for instance, offers zero-fee conversion between dollars and USDC.

Use a third-party ramp like MoonPay instead, and you'll pay around 1.5% plus a half-percent spread, so your $1,000 buys about $980 in coins. On the sell side, cashing out is free-ish on Coinbase in the U.S., a euro or two over SEPA on Binance in Europe, and roughly a 0.5-1.5% spread if you cash out P2P in an emerging market.

Add it up honestly, and a real, door-to-door crypto transfer costs somewhere around 1% to 3% on good rails. That beats the bank and PayPal on most routes. It's just not the "free" you were promised by someone quoting only the network fee.

The part that actually matters: your wallet vs. their wallet

Inside crypto, there's a second choice that decides not just your cost but your privacy. And in 2026, this is the real dividing line.

A centralized exchange, such as Coinbase, Binance, or Kraken, is custodial. They hold your coins, and to open an account, you hand over your identity. By 2026, the vast majority of these exchanges are fully KYC-compliant, which means your name, your documents, and your entire transaction history are linked to your account.

A self-custody wallet, for example, MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Phantom, or Coin Wallet, or a hardware device like a Ledger, flips all of that. You hold your own keys. And self-custody comes with a weight of its own: lose your keys and the money's gone. No support line. No password reset. No chargeback. You're the bank now with everything that means.

So the privacy-smart move in 2026 looks like this: keep the transfer on a self-custody wallet on a cheap network, and treat the on-ramp and off-ramp as the two moments where you trade a little visibility for the ability to touch real cash.

Where are you actually sending money?

Here's the thing: you don't send money to "abroad." You send it to a place. And the cheapest method changes with the destination. So let's walk the three routes that trip people up.

From the U.S. to Latin America (Argentina and Brazil)

This is where crypto genuinely shines, and it's not an accident. Both countries have deep, homegrown hunger for dollars: Argentina because of inflation and currency controls, Brazil because it built one of the best digital-payment cultures on earth.

This one deserves its own section, because here the normal rules break down completely, and crypto stops being "the cheapest option" and becomes, sometimes, "the only option."

One thing to say plainly: personal transfers between private individuals are generally legal; what sanctions forbid are dealings with specifically sanctioned entities. If you use this corridor, understand that line, keep records, and get proper advice. The rules are strict, and they keep moving.

So, what's actually the cheapest?

There's no single winner, and anyone who gives you a one-word answer is selling something. It depends on where you're sending it, how much you're sending, and how much you care about privacy and paper trails.

But the patterns are clear enough to be useful:

1. For everyday transfers, crypto on a cheap network is the lowest-cost option, roughly 1% to 3% all-in once you count the ramps, comfortably under a bank or PayPal. The price of admission is learning the mechanics: pick the right network, use USDC in Europe, respect the off-ramp.

2. For big, high-stakes transfers, a bank wire earns its fee. Expensive and slow, but unimpeachable, and the flat cost shrinks as a percentage when the sum is large.

3. For convenience on a supported route, especially cash pickup or instant local delivery. PayPal proper is rarely the cheapest option. It's what you pay for not comparing.

And for privacy, the answer lives inside the crypto option: a self-custody wallet keeps you out of the identity-linked, fully-logged world of centralized exchanges, right up until you touch fiat. That's a real advantage in 2026. It just comes with real responsibility, because when you're the bank, there's no one to call at 2 a.m.

So here's my one takeaway, the thing many people wish someone had told them before that first transfer disappeared into thin air: before you hit send, get a live quote, add up all three cost layers, and compare the amount that actually lands.
